Takazawa candle flames are bigger and brighter than other companies. The flame comes from a special wick made from a unique recipe dating back to the 16th century and is a symbol of ancestral wisdom.

First made at a time when there were no electric lights, light meant candles, and a lot of thought was put into making candlelight brighter. The Takazawa wick is made from plant-based materials such as dried rush and washi-paper, thus symbolizing the beautiful relationship between our ancestors and nature.

The shape of these candles is inspired by “The Pine Trees” screen, painted by Tohaku Hasegawa, long considered a great painter of Japan. Reflecting the landscape of Nanao City, filled with pine trees, the flame of this candle is an extension of the gentle lines of these trees, bringing to mind a rustic simplicity.

Tohaku candles are made of the fruit from a Rhus succedanea plant (Japanese wax tree). The candle wick is made by twisting washi paper and dried rushes. Winding the dried rushes around a hollow cord of washi paper allows air to be pulled up from the bottom, producing a stronger flame.

Minimal with a good weight to it, this candle holder is best used with the Japanese Tohaku candles made by Takazawa Candles. This candle stand is made of solid nambu cast iron, a technique of making ironware products that dates back to the 17th century.

Takazawa Candle Co., Nanao Japan

Takazawa Candle has been making candles since 1892. Located in the port city of Nanao, sumac wax from the Kyushu region along with Japanese paper (wa-shi) from Iwami are used to produce candles. While candle guilds used to be prolific in this area, Takazawa Candle is the last remaining candle maker in the region.
